The JC Application Process

The application contains two parts: basic information and application questions. Applications have closed for 2024, but here's what the application looked like:

Basic Information

1. Name, birthdate, gender/pronouns, and contact information
2. When did you attend Mathcamp?
3. If you are in college, at what college and in what year are you? If not, how have you spent your time since graduating from high school?
4. Do you have a driver's license, first-aid training, or any other related skills that might be applicable to being a JC?

Free Response Questions

Please answer with at least a paragraph, but try to keep the response to each of these under a page. Please keep in mind that although having "the Mathcamp spirit" is crucial to a good JC, so are competence, initiative, and responsibility. Your application should convince us that you possess all three qualities.

1. Tell us why you would like to be a JC. What motivates you to apply? What strengths do you see yourself bringing to the JC team?
2. What strategies do you have for working with a group? What have you learned from team-work experiences?
3. One way that Mathcamp staff make camp magical (and carry on camp culture) is by running scheduleboard activities and coming up with new field trip ideas. What events would you be excited to organize at camp this summer?
4. Is there anything else you would like the hiring committee to know that has not already been addressed in this application? If there is anything at all you would like to share with us, we're all ears!

Mini-Challenges

This portion of the written application asks you to work on mini versions of tasks that JCs actually work on!

• Room Assignments: The first is a logistical task (you might think of it like a logic puzzle): reviewing a room assignment. Based on the data, your task is to evaluate the assignment and suggest changes.
• Field Trip: The second is a task with more room for creativity: planning a field trip. There are two options here, and you can pick your favorite: trampolining or indoor rock-climbing. You'll also get to use your judgment to decide how you approach the process, and use your communication skills to deliver relevant information to campers and fellow staffs.

When you create an application, you'll get all the necessary information to get started on these mini-challenges.

Submit your application online at https://appsys.mathcamp.org.

Note: as an alum, you can use your existing username and password to log in, and the system will recognize you as eligible to apply as a JC. (Please do not create a new account.) If you have forgotten your username or password, use the reset button to recover your account from your email address. If you no longer have access to the email address on file, contact us and we will manually reset your credentials.

Please submit your application by Jan. 8, 2024; we will begin reviewing applications promptly after the deadline. We plan to make our first round of offers in mid-February and expect to have final decisions by the end of February. If you have another deadline and need a decision sooner, let us know and we'll do our best to work with your calendar.
